Announcing auditions for Cabrillo Music Theatre’s first production of the 2009-2010 season, GUYS AND DOLLS. This Frank Loesser/Abe Burrows classic, revived four times on Broadway, will be directed by Southern California theatre favorite Nick DeGruccio. DeGruccio returns to Cabrillo, having won a 2008 Ovation Award for Best Direction on JEKYLL & HYDE. Darryl Archibald will serve as Musical Director and conduct the orchestra, and Roger Castellano will handle the choreography. The production will be supervised by Cabrillo Music Theatre’s Artistic Director, Lewis Wilkenfeld. Auditions will be held on August 8th, 9th, and 10th 2009.

GUYS AND DOLLS begins rehearsal for non-AEA on or after September 8th, and for AEA on September 21st, 2009. Performances run October 16th through October 25th, 2009 at the Kavli Theatre, Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. Currently seeking Equity Talent and non-Equity Talent.

*General Note – Looking for Damon Runyon-esque types. Very NY, street sensibilities, edgy and tough talkers, most with good hearts underneath. The Hot Box is “way off Broadway” and the hoods are second-rate.

SKY MASTERSON (25 - 35) A smart-talking, charming, savvy and world-wise gambler who is a cut above the “street” gamblers. Strong singer (Legit Baritone).

SARAH BROWN (20 - 30) A proud, hardworking, steet-smart but naive “mission doll”. Very passionate. Strong singer (Legit Soprano with some belt).

MISS ADELAIDE (35 - 45) A performer at the Hot Box club who has a permanent cold from being engaged to Nathan for 14 years. She is full of heart, likeable and ever-hopeful. Must sing (Alto with a character belt) and move well.

NATHAN DETROIT (35 – 45) A not so smart but loveable gambler engaged to Adelaide for 14 years. Street wise and obsessed with “the game”, a big kid at times. Must sing (Baritone) and move.

NICELY-NICELY JOHNSON (30 – 45) Nathan’s cohort, bumbling, eats a lot, heavy but moves really well. Strong singer (High Tenor) who moves.

ARVIDE ABERNATHY (60 -70) Sarah’s grandfather and guardian, world-wise and fatherly. Must sing (Baritone).

BENNY SOUTHSTREET (30 - 45) Tough talking, Nathan’s cohort, Brooklyn-type. Must sing (High Baritone) and move.

RUSTY CHARLIE - Gambler, street-wise, quirky. Must sing (High Baritone) and move.

GENERAL MATILDA B. CARTWRIGHT (40 – 50) Salvation Army Matron – straight-laced, authoritative yet girlish underneath. Singing and movement a plus.

HARRY THE HORSE - A professional gambler, very “Brooklyn.” Must sing and move.

BIG JULE - A gangster from Chicago, huge, imposing and tough. Singing and movement a plus.

LIEUTENANT BRANNIGAN (40 – 50) Neighborhood detective trying to stop the crap game and keep order, has an Irish sensibility. Non-singing role.

Announcing new auditions for Cabrillo Music Theatre’s production of CATS. Based on “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T.S. Elliot, and set to music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, CATS ran on Broadway for 18 years, winning 7 Tony Awards. This production, the first to be mounted specifically for the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, will be directed by Ovation Award-winner Dana Solimando, a veteran of CATS on Broadway and the National Tour. Ilana Eden will serve as Music Director and Conductor, and the production will be supervised by Cabrillo Music Theatre’s Artistic Director, Lewis Wilkenfeld.

CATS begins rehearsal for non-AEA June 20th, 2009. Performances run July 24th through August 2nd at the Kavli Theatre, Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, Countrywide Performing Arts Center. Currently seeking non-Equity Talent for the following roles (all others have been cast):

Bombalurina – Female. Tall, sexy, brassy woman with great body. Strong Belt, Low G to Mid-range C#. Sings “Macavity.” Must dance well. Triple threat.
Coricopat – Male. Tantomile’s male twin. Excellent dancer who sings.
Plato/Macavity – Male. Strong, Sexy & Athletic. Tall & strapping. Able to play the villain (Macavity). Excellent dancer who is good with lifts. Tumbling a plus.
Pouncival – Male. The innocent but playful young male kitten. Short, excellent dancer.
Tumblebrutus – Male. Excellent dancer who sings. Great lifter & tumbler. Average to short in height.
ONE MALE PIT SINGER - Baritone with range to G. Ability to read music a plus. (Dance call not required)

All of the above roles (Except for the Pit Singer) will begin with a Dance Call.

Demeter – Female. Sings “Macavity” with Bombalurina. Strong Belt, Low G to Mid-range C. Average to tall. Sexy with great body. Excellent dancer. True triple threat.
Grizabella – Female. “The Glamour Cat.” Sings “Memory.” Excellent voice. Strong Belt, Low F# to E flat. Strong actress. Should be able to play 40’s but all age ranges are encouraged to audition. Dance not necessary, but must move.
Jellylorum/Griddlebone – Female. The “Opera Cat.” Legit Soprano I range, Low B to High C. Dance a plus, but not necessary. Must move well. Age range 20’s-40’s.
Jennyanydots – Female. “The Gumbie Cat.” Character actress who taps & moves well. All body types, 30’s-40’s. Sings Low G to Mid-range C#.
Mistoffelees – Male. “The Magical, Conjuring Cat.” Outstanding male dancer with strong ballet. Must have excellent solid turns. Short to average height. Young & playful. Singing a plus but not necessary.
Mungojerrie – Male. Lovable juvenile delinquent. Excellent dancer/singer (Tenor) with lots of energy. Physical comedy a plus. Triple threat.
Munkustrap – Male. Narrator. Strapping man with good body & commanding presence. Average height to tall. Baritone with two octave range up to G. Must move well. Dance a plus.
Old Deuteronomy – Male. Regal. Gentle, large, robust man. Strong Baritone with range to G. Dance minimal to none.

A reminder that December 7th is the start of auditions for Cabrillo Music Theatre’s production of 42ND STREET. New audition times have been scheduled on Wednesday, December 10th, in Thousand Oaks, to accommodate the overflow.

This classic “backstage musical” will be directed and choreographed by original Broadway cast member Jon Engstrom. Steven Applegate will serve as Musical Director and Conductor, and the production will be supervised by Cabrillo Music Theatre’s Artistic Director, Lewis Wilkenfeld.

42ND STREET begins rehearsal for non-AEA February 16th, and for AEA on March 2nd, 2009. Performances run March 27th through April 5th at the Kavli Theatre, Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, Countrywide Performing Arts Center. Currently seeking Equity Talent and non-Equity Talent.

MAGGIE JONES – Leading character role. The writer of the show. Must sing (alto) & move very well and must be able to play comedy with great warmth & charm.

BERT BARRY – Leading character role. The other writer of the show. Comedian with vaudeville timing. Should have a warm nebbish quality. (35 & up). Must sing (character, rich baritone).

ABNER DILLION – Character role. The Stars “sugar daddy” from Oklahoma. Prefer a large man. Ability to sing a help but not necessary.

ANYTIME ANNIE – Young character role. One of the girls in the “chorus”. Must be a first rate tap dancer and must sing well with a big belt voice (alto).

PAT DENNING – 40’s – 50’s Handsome. “Dorothy Brock’s” real love interest. A vaudeville performer down on his luck. A warm nurturing quality. Must sing well (baritone).

MAC – Character actor 30’s & up. The stage manager and also plays other roles. Ability to sing well a real plus but not necessary.

ANDY LEE – The dance director of the show. Must be old enough to have achieved that status and must be excellent tap dancer & must sing.

OSCAR – The rehearsal pianist. Non-speaking role. Must play piano extremely well.

MALE AND FEMALE DANCER/SINGERS - Also looking for a large, youthful, well toned, tap dancing ensemble (18 women, 10 men) who sing well. Other roles in the show will be assigned from this group.

Cabrillo Music Theatre announces auditions the West Coast Premiere of BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO, a "jukebox" book musical, built around the songs of Neil Sedaka. Taking place in a Catskills resort, circa 1960, it weaves a tale of love and laughter with classic Neil Sedaka hits, such as "Calendar Girl," "Love Will Keep Us Together," "Where The Boys Are," and the title tune. The six-member cast is joined onstage by a four-piece band of singer-musicians. BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO will be directed and choreographed by Troy Magino. Lloyd Cooper will serve as Musical Director, and the production will be supervised by Cabrillo Music Theatre’s Artistic Director, Lewis Wilkenfeld.

Performances to take place at the Kavli Theatre, Thousand Oaks Countrywide Civic Arts Plaza, Thousand Oaks, CA. ALL ROLES OPEN TO NON-EQUITY. There is pay for non-union performers. Diversity is encouraged; all ethnic types welcome.

MARGE GELMAN (20-30’s): mezzo soprano, comfortable to an E; Abandoned at the altar, Marge is an aspiring dentist from Brooklyn who finds herself in the Catskills on what would have been her honeymoon weekend with her best friend Lois. Must be strong vocalist with good comedic ability. All types considered.
LOIS WARNER (20’s-30’s): alto with some mezzo soprano ability, comfortable to a C; An aspiring nightclub singer, Lois lives her life as if in a Betty Grable movie. In trying to help her friend Marge recover from heartbreak, she inadvertently puts her in the line of fire of Del, the hotel's suave but manipulative bandleader. Lois is a quirky girl with more heart than smarts. Must be strong vocalist with good comedic ability. All types considered.
DEL DELMONACO (late 20's to 30's) tenor, comfortable to an A; The resorts headliner with more charm than one person should be allowed to have. Del will do anything to get ahead, including misleading Marge into thinking he loves her and stealing his cousin Gabe's songs for his own use. Del is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Must be strong vocalist with good sense of comic timing and have the ability to ‘live’ in the period. All types considered.
GABE (mid to late 20's) tenor, Bb-C range; The clumsy, brainy and terribly sweet Guy Friday at the hotel, Gabe is on a fast track to joining his father's orthodontia practice. Lacking the self-confidence to perform his own music, Gabe is secretly the songwriting genius behind the music Del claims as his own. Upon meeting Marge he falls head over heels. Must be strong vocalist with a likable sensitivity. All types considered.
ESTHER (mid 40’s's to 60's) alto, comfortable to a C, or at least a Bb, but should really be rich in her low to mid register; The owner of the mid-size hotel named after her (Esther's Paradise), Esther is a survivor. Since the death of her husband, she has single-handedly kept the hotel afloat using crafty solutions, boundless energy and creativity to keep guests happy. She is fiercely independent, refusing help or support from anyone, and she's always there with a quip or smart remark. Must be strong but likable personality. All types considered.
HARVEY (50's to 60's) baritone, should have range to an F# or a G; The resident "tummler" (comedian/social director) at Esther's Paradise, Harvey is old-school. He is all about the punch line. A confirmed bachelor, Harvey spends most of his life cracking wise and avoiding any show of genuine emotion or vulnerability. Must be good vocalist with a strong sense of comedic timing. All types considered.
THE BAND (Piano, Bass, Guitar, Drums): The band is visible onstage as the "House Band" at Esther's Paradise Resort, and sings throughout the show. Must hold harmony. Male or female welcome. Already-formed bands will be considered.

KATHY SELDEN (Age 20s) – Debbie Reynolds role in film. Attractive ingénue. Fresh and spirited, this aspiring “serious” actress initially rebuffs movie star Don’s romantic advances. Although secretly smitten with Don, she is not afraid to speak her mind, and the two ultimately fall in love. Partnering and tap dance skills a must. Lyrical singing voice to a C.
LINA LAMONT (Age 25-40) – Jean Hagen role in film. Although a glamorous silent screen star, her offscreen persona is brash and crass. Character voice, highly comedic (yet not a caricature). She has a song, “What’s Wrong With Me,” not in the film. Belt singing voice to an F.
R.F. SIMPSON (Age 30-60) – Character role. Studio head of Monumental Pictures. Commanding physical presence. Singing a plus.
DORA BAILEY (Age 30-50) – Comedic, character role. A bubbly, larger-than-life, Hedda Hopper-style gossip columnist and radio personality. Seeking all physical types. Strong singing voice a plus.
ROSCOE DEXTER (Age 30-60) – Comedic, character role. High-strung movie director of Monumental Pictures. Seeking all physical types. Singing a plus.
MALE DICTION COACH (Age 50-70) - Comedic, character role. Shakespearean speaking voice. Seeking all physical types. Singing a plus.
MISS DINSMORE (Age 40-60) - Character role. Lena’s frustrated classical speaking voice coach. Seeking all physical types. Singing a plus.
GIRL IN THE GREEN DRESS (Age 20s-30s) – Cyd Charisse archetype. Sexy, leggy seductress of Don in the Broadway Ballet fantasy. A smoldering non-speaking role that tells a story through dance. Strong jazz and partnering skills a must. Doubles as ENSEMBLE.
PRODUCTION TENOR – Strong vocals and charisma essential. Performs solo star turn in “Beautiful Girl” production number. Doubles as ENSEMBLE.
ROD – Eager Monumental Pictures press representative. Doubles as ENSEMBLE.
YOUNG DON and YOUNG COSMO (Ages 8-12) – Two dynamic boys to play Don and Cosmo as children. Must dance well with basic tap skills. Singing a plus.

Auditions for SINGIN' IN THE RAIN

Cabrillo Music Theatre will hold auditions for SINGIN' IN THE RAIN on May 17-20, with callbacks on May 27-29. Rehearsals begin mid-June to late June. AEA rehearsals begin June 30th. Performances run July 25 through August 3.

SINGIN' IN THE RAIN will be directed by Larry Raben, and will be choreographed by David Engel, who will also play the role of "Don Lockwood." All roles except the role of Don are available. Two A.E.A. Guest Artists Contracts are available, to be used among the following roles: Kathy, Cosmo, Lina Lamont.

Ain't Misbehavin' AUDITIONS

Announcing auditions for Cabrillo Music Theatres production of AINT MISBEHAVIN, The Fats Waller musical revue. The first Broadway musical revue ever to win the Tony Award for Best Musical, AINT MISBEHAVIN will be directed by Ken Page, a member of the original Broadway cast. Darryl Archibald will serve as Musical Director, and the production will be overseen by Cabrillo Music Theatres Artistic Director, Lewis Wilkenfeld.

AINT MISBEHAVIN begins rehearsal in Thousand Oaks on Monday, December 17th. Performances run January 4th through the 13th, 2008 at the Kavli Theatre, Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, Countrywide Performing Arts Center.

AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' is an ensemble piece with five star performances. The cast must be able to work in both capacities. The actual star of the evening is FATS WALLER and his music.

All must be strong actors and movers as well as singers. Prepare two contrasting pieces from the show for your particular character; also have an extra period piece not from the show on hand. Be prepared to move if asked. Age is not a dominant factor. All must be able to meet high energy performance levels.

NELL African American; Leading lady, comedic actress. Assured woman's presence. Self-aware sexuality. Should be good at physical comedy. Vocal range Alto, with a high belt range.

ARMELIA African American; Leading lady, character actress. Must be able to play several distinct characters. An overhaul lady-like demeanor. Vocal range - high soprano with a belt.

CHARLAINE African American; Leading lady, ingénue. Classy young woman. Vivacious energy. Strong dancer (tap). Must handle broad comedy well. Vocal range alto, with character soprano notes.

ANDRÉ African American; Leading man. Man about town, a dandy. Strong Dancer. Sly, sensual sexuality. Wide vocal range bass to high baritone.

KEN African American; Leading man - Character actor. Strong comedic acting ability a must. Any resemblance to Fats Waller a plus. Larger man a preference. Wide vocal range bass to high baritone.

Three Equity contracts available (Guest Artist, Tier III). ALL ROLES OPEN TO NON-EQUITY! There is pay for non-Equity.

EKYLL & HYDE Auditions:

Announcing auditions for Cabrillo Music Theatre’s production of JEKYLL & HYDE, the Leslie Bricusse/Frank Wildhorn musical. Having recently completed a three-year-run on Broadway, JEKYLL & HYDE will be directed by multiple Ovation Award-winning director Nick DeGruccio. The production will be overseen by Cabrillo Music Theatre’s Artistic Director, Lewis Wilkenfeld.

JEKYLL & HYDE rehearses in Thousand Oaks, beginning Monday, February 4th, 2008 (non-Equity performers) and Monday, February 11th (Equity performers). Performances run March 7th through the 16th, 2008 at the Kavli Theatre, Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, Countrywide Performing Arts Center.

Three A.E.A. Guest Artist (Tier III) contracts will be available, to be cast among the principal roles. ALL ROLES ARE OPEN, AND ARE OPEN TO NON-EQUITY TALENT.
